It is a derivative of hyaluronic acid that works as a lubricant and shock absorber by increasing how well the fluid in the knee joint performs. It occurs naturally on the corneal endothelium and has a high affinity for receptors. It acts as a surgical aid in the extraction of cataracts, intraocular implants, corneal transplants, filtering glaucoma and retinal attachment surgery. It is used for pain relief to those suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. It is typically used when other pain relievers do not work.
