7-Hydroxy 17B-Dihydro Dehydroepiandrosterone- 7-Alpha-Hydroxy-Dhea or 7-OH for short is the most abundant hormone in the body. It is a natural steroid prohormone produced from cholesterol by the gonads, adrenal glads, brain and in the skin. 7a-Hydroxy-Dehydroepiandrosterone is a compound whose effects on immune system are being studied. In experiments on human and murine lymphoid organs, circulating 3ß-hydroxysteroids, including pregnenolone (PREG), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and epiandrosterone (EPIA), are 7a-hydroxylated by a cytochrome P450 identified in the hippocampus as P4507B1. Mouse and human lymphoid organs produced different patterns of 3ß-hydroxysteroid 7a-hydroxylation with the absence of pregnenolone and epiandrosterone hydroxylation in human and mouse, respectively. Both 7a-hydroxy-DHEA and 7a-hydroxy-EPIA triggered a significant increase of antitetanus toxoid and anti-Bordetella pertussis toxins IgGs production in cultures of activated B + T cells derived from human tonsils, whereas both 7a-hydroxy-PREG and 7a-hydroxy-DHEA increased the immune response in mouse. Paracrine action of 7a-hydroxysteroids resulted from their production in cells of the lymphoid organ; such differences might contribute to the extent of immune response. 7a-Hydroxy-Dehydroepiandrosterone is also an active constituent of green tea which is effective in weight loss.
